The Black surname has strong links to the district over multiple generations. After playing at the CATS as a junior, John moved across to play with some life-long mates at Glengarry CC when our club was in recess. Once the club moved back into A-Grade in the late 1980’s he moved across to be both an on and off field leader.

As a player he could be described as a non-metrosexual version of Marcus Stoinis, able to do some herculean things with both bat and ball. As his body aged he still continued to have tremendous hand-eye coordination matched with brute strength, dispatching balls with ease over the boundary.

It is off-field though that Bono’s legacy is remembered, serving Callignee and Traralgon South Cricket Club as President for a record 14 consecutive seasons. After these 14 consecutive years as president, Bono stepped sideways into the role of Vice President for a further 4 years. After all his years of aforementioned dedication and service, including 1 season as B Grade Captain and 2 seasons of Junior Coaching, our home ground was proudly renamed in his honour.

John created an inclusive family friendly environment well before the word inclusive was trending. All children, wives and girlfriends of club members were greeted by their first names as they'd enter the club, having a keen memory for those who would support his 2nd home. This is a trait that is sorely missed as John passed away due to illness in 2021 and his impact on our club will long be remembered.
